Edward and Cynthia Institute of Public Health – an Advanced Technical Cooperation centre with Yenepoya University had an industry visit for Masters of Public Health (MPH) students to BASF India Pvt Ltd.
The factory visit was scheduled to understand the Environmental and Occupational Health standards, Factory Governance, learn more about the Factory Act 1948 and also the outcomes to be learnt at a factory.
An introductory presentation was given by Mr. Santhosh from BASF and then the students were taken for a tour of the control rooms, manufacturing units, boiler areas, effluent treatment plant etc.
BASF stands for Badische Anilin and Soda Fabrik which specializes in manufacturing various chemicals needed by different industries. BASF was founded in Germany in 1865 and in India their first production site was started in Thane, Maharashtra. BASF Mangalore was started in 1996 as Mangalore is strategically located keeping in view the Logistics and connectivity. The site is spread across more than 200 acres and houses three different manufacturing units.
The Students of MPH were exposed to the implementation of various aspects of Public Health like Disaster Management, Occupational Health Hazards, Factory work policies and Emergency response systems etc. As a part of this Trip students also had the opportunity to understand the process of solid and other forms of waste treatment at a factory. Students witnessed the working of the plant starting from the production unit to all the way upto the waste treatment setup.
Faculties from CHD Group, Yenepoya University were also present.
